Disc golf, our favourite sport, has been growing in popularity in recent years. The simple act of throwing a disc into a series of baskets, with the goal of completing the course in as few throws as possible, can be enjoyed by anyone. While disc golf is a relatively new sport, it has already developed a variety of names and terms that are used by players and fans. Here's a few we've come across...
Frisbee golf is one of the most commonly used names for disc golf. This term comes from the fact that many people use Frisbees (a trademarked brand of flying disc) to play the sport. While some players prefer to use specific disc golf discs, Frisbees can work just as well for beginners or casual players.
Frolf is a term that was popularized in the 1990s, and is a combination of the words "Frisbee" and "golf." This name is still used by some players, but it is not as commonly heard as "disc golf" or "Frisbee golf."
This name is fairly straightforward and simply describes the sport for what it is: golf played with a disc. While not as catchy as some of the other names on this list, it is still a perfectly accurate description.
Some players use the term "disk golf" instead of "disc golf," but the two terms are interchangeable. This name may be preferred by some players because it more closely resembles the spelling of "disk" as it is used in computer technology.
While "throw and catch" may not technically be a name for disc golf, it is a term that some players use to describe the sport. This name emphasizes the fact that disc golf involves throwing and catching a disc, just like playing catch with a ball.
The baskets used in disc golf are often called "chain baskets," and this has led to some players referring to the sport as "chain golf." While not as widely used as some of the other names on this list, it is still a creative and accurate way to describe the game.
Disc golf has developed a variety of names and terms over the years. While some names, like "Frisbee golf," are more commonly used than others, all of these names accurately describe the sport and its unique characteristics. Whether you're a seasoned disc golfer or just getting started, it's always fun to learn new names and terminology associated with this exciting and challenging sport!
