The growth of "Frisbee Golf"

Thursday, Feb 1, 2024 9:40am | Kevin Farley

First, let's address something important... while "Frisbee Golf" or "Frolf" are both perfectly acceptable names for the sport, you'll have more success sourcing out resources and information about the sport if you use its proper name... Disc Golf :)

You may not realize it, but disc golf is actually a much bigger sport, and much more popular than you think. As of the end of 2022, there were more than 14,000 disc golf courses worldwide, growing at a rate of 4.3 courses per day according to UDisc!  The top three countries for number of courses in 2022 were:

  • United States: 9465
  • Finland: 1030
  • Canada: 702

Besides courses, more than 19 million rounds were scored on the UDisc app, and when we take into account a ratio of casual rounds played to those scored of 5:1, it's estimated that almost 100 million rounds of disc golf were played in 2022! Those rounds were played by 1.2 million players on UDisc, so if we use the same multiplier as a rough estimate, we can guess that there are more than 6 million disc golfers worldwide.

When we look at disc golf's older sibling, Ball Golf (though don't call it that to players), there are estimated to be 38k courses worldwide, and more than 66 million players. In 2022, the Golf industry was estimated to be worth $84 billion dollars. While disc golf has a long way to go to catch up, the reality is that this is happening a lot faster than people would have thought even just 10 years ago. The fact that disc golf is already at a tenth the size of golf in players, and well ahead of golf with regard to courses per player capita and growing, it shows how popular it is with the players once they start playing. 90% of disc golf courses are free to play because the large majority of courses have been installed in municipal parks as a recreational resource. That's due to the relatively low cost of entry when compared to other sports. That number is slowly starting to shift though due to the growth in demand. More players are looking for higher-end experiences and are willing to pay to play. That's a great indicator of the health of the disc golf industry, and for the potential "Frolf" has to be able to make a meaningful impact on visitor numbers to properties that install courses!

Education about the sport and helping the general population with simple things like transitioning from names like Frisbee Golf or Frolf, which admittedly don't sound very serious, to Disc Golf are helping bring the sport into the public consciousness. Once people start to look at the huge number of discs available, the wide variety of shot types, and the availability even in their own cities that they didn't know existed, it's helped elevate the sport in their minds and brought more and more people out to courses to try it. If the stats have shown anything, it's that once people start, very few stop. In fact, it's more likely to turn into an addiction!
